LiveBlogging from VMWorld 2009 & Schedule

Just as a reminder, as I have at previous VMWorlds, I will once again be LiveBlogging. This year it will be a bit more dynamic as I plan on toting my Dell Mini 9 running Win7 (which has been fantastic, by the way) to each session. Also, unlike VMWorld Europe where my mobile device lacked coverage, I will be on Twitter as well.
Below is my schedule, as of right now.

One Step Closer to VCDX: I just found out I passed the VCDX Design Exam
Announced at VMware Partner Exchange 2008, the VMware VCDX certification is the mecca of certifications for VMware architects around the world.
I passed the VCDX Enterprise Exam about a year ago, and took the VCDX Design Exam in spring of this 2009.
I just found out that I have indeed passed the VCDX Design Exam!

Amazon Web Services (AWS) versus Microsoft Windows Azure: Price Comparison

Now that Microsoft has finally announced pricing for the Azure platform, I thought I would take a look at comparing the pricing model against the most popular and mature cloud on the market to date, Amazon Web Services (AWS). My initial reaction is that Microsoft took Amazon’s price structure and met their cost point, or shaved off half a cent.
Acronyms
AWS = Amazon Web Services
AMI = Amazon Machine Image

I'm going to VMWorld 2009

I've just received confirmation that I will be attending VMWorld. As always, I'll be involved in both public and private discussions around virtualization and cloud computing. I'm happy to meet to discuss the industry, and as of right now, do not have a full schedule.
Also, keep an eye out for me in the labs.
See you in San Francisco (a city I much prefer to Las Vegas).
I will also be liveblogging as I have been since 2006, complete with grainy pictures from my Blackberry.
Cheers.

Configuring your Blackberry with Microsoft Online Services (Webmail)

I followed this guide with no avail.
The key for me (I'm in NA), was changing:
https://red001.mail.microsoftonline.com
to:
https://red001.mail.microsoftonline.com/owa
Hope that helps some of the Blackberry users out there.
Cheers.
Cloud-Cast.com mobilizes Virtual Desktops to combat Swine Flu (H1N1)

As additional companies close their doors to prevent additional exposure to Swine Flu (H1N1), Cloud-Cast, a company delivering cloud based solutions, has ramped up its swat team to design, implement and manage desktop environments in a matter of hours or days.
By implementing a private on-premise cloud hosting virtual desktops coupled with VMware View, remote users can connect to both their virtual and physical desktops.

While other topics may have stood out most to the rest of the attendees, I felt that there was a fundamental difference in the definition of cloud computing from those who are developers and infrastructure oriented, compared to the definition used by the cloud hosting providers.

Microsoft Live Mesh - Using the Cloud
I am, self-admittedly, someone who lives on the edge. I don’t believe in doing backups of my desktop, my laptop or anything else I use as a consumer (servers, databases, etc. are another story of course).
This has burned me a few times in the past, but I’ve learned that, for the most part, I have everything in an email, or someone has kept a copy for me – I’ve remained relatively unscathed by this approach. I believe that my data should just exist, as a given. Hardware failures? Not my problem. Laptop takes a loss on a flight abroad? C’est la vie.

VMware's Anti-SCVMM Video Campaign: SCVMM Destroys VMware Infrastructure 3 Templates During Import
As reported here on vcritical.com, and originally on vmware.com, VMware has unleased a fantastic marketing campaign to dispel the rumors of how Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager can manage a VMware virtual infrastructure.

Moving Forward: VCDX Certification - Design Exam
Back on September 6th, I received the great news that I had passed the first VCDX exam - Enterprise Administration.
I took the exam way back in July of 2008 so I was very happy to finally get the good word from VMware.

Moving Forward: VCDX Certification - Enterprise Exam
Well a bit of good news arrived last week. Back in early July I took a day trip up to NYC to take the Enterprise Exam, one of the steps in VMware's new VCDX exam.
The four requirements to receive this esteemed and exclusive certification are:
- Must be certified as a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) on VMware Infrastructure 3.
- Pass the VMware Enterprise Administration Exam. Includes live labs and tests a higher level of skill set than the exam for VCP on VMware Infrastructure 3.

Sponsorship Opportunity for Virtualization Vendors: Nissan 350Z Piloted by Jason Langone
After a very successful 2008 season, I'm preparing to kick off the 2009 season in style.
Since I often receive emails from vendors looking for sponsorship opportunities, I decided to open up my track car's livery to the virtualization ecosystem.

VMWorld Europe 2009: VMware vCenter on Linux Tech Preview Review
One of the sessions I was most interested in yesterday was the vCenter for Linux session, hosted by Adam Young.
The Blackberry 8330 takes the worst pictures ever.

Some key points made:
- Based on CentOS 5. This is the [un-]official platform for all of VMware's own appliances. It's RHEL without the trademarked bits.
- There will be no embedded database in the appliance; that's for the admin to provide.
- First release will include support for Oracle only.
